IU historian named associate vice provost for faculty development and diversity

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Claude Clegg, professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been named associate vice provost for faculty development and diversity at Indiana University Bloomington.

In the new position, Clegg will work closely with the IU Bloomington Office of the Provost and the Indiana University Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs to help recruit faculty and provide them with opportunities to thrive professionally and personally.

Clegg will report to James Wimbush, the IU vice president for diversity, equity and multicultural affairs, and to Tom Gieryn, the IU Bloomington vice provost for faculty and academic affairs. He will work with other vice provosts to expand existing faculty development programs and to develop new programs to improve the leadership capacity of the campus and its academic units. He will provide administrative vision for the campus's dual-career recruitment program and for its strategic faculty recruitment program, designed to increase the diversity of IU Bloomington faculty.

"I look forward to working with colleagues to formulate and carry out strategies for recruiting, cultivating and retaining the best faculty possible, with an eye to perpetuating IU Bloomington's reputation as a premier Research I institution," Clegg said.

Clegg also will engage in faculty community-building, facilitating the creation of networks of faculty with similar scholarly interests or personal circumstances and providing mentoring and related support. The position will leverage IU Bloomington's investment in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity by nurturing accountability circles among small groups of faculty. The campus became part of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity in 2013, and more than 20 faculty members took part last summer in the center's Faculty Success Program, a "boot camp" designed to help faculty launch and sustain successful academic careers.

Clegg served as chairman of the Department of History from 2006-10. His research and teaching interests include the African diaspora of the Atlantic world, social movements and African-Americans in the U.S. South. He is the author of "Troubled Ground: A Tale of Murder, Lynching and Reckoning in the New South"; "The Price of Liberty: African Americans and the Making of Liberia"; and "An Original Man: The Life and Times of Elijah Muhammad."
