BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sharlene Newman, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences and director of the IU Imaging Research Facility, has been appointed as associate vice provost for undergraduate education at Indiana University Bloomington. She will assume the role Jan. 1.

A member of the IU faculty since 2004, Newman holds doctoral and master’s degrees in biomedical engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and served as a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University. Newman leads the Cognitive Neuroimaging Lab, where her team examines the neural bases of cognition as well as addiction, using MRI technology.

“I am excited to work with the team in the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education to develop more opportunities for students to be involved in research and creative activities,” Newman said. “Actively engaging with information obtained in the classroom is an important part of learning. I have witnessed students in my lab get excited by research, and it has been life-altering for them. I think it's wonderful that the university has made this engagement a priority in the strategic plan.”

As associate vice provost, Newman will lead key strategic areas of the undergraduate experience, with a focus on programs supporting undergraduate research, prestigious scholarships and engaged learning.

Newman outlined her goals for enhancing undergraduate student success, which include:

  • Making students aware of engaged learning opportunities and ensuring they know how to access them.
  • Providing faculty with resources that facilitate them in offering quality research opportunities for undergraduates.
  • Assisting the Indiana University Journal of Undergraduate Research in increasing its prominence both on campus and off.
  • Facilitating better cooperation and communication between the various programs on campus that support undergraduate research and creative activity.

"I am absolutely thrilled that Sharlene will join in the senior leadership of OVPUE,” said Dennis Groth, vice provost for undergraduate education. “She is an outstanding scientist and has long been an active proponent of engaging undergraduate students in research and creative activity."

The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education oversees programs and initiatives in support of outstanding academic experiences for all IU Bloomington undergraduate students. It provides advising, testing and enrichment resources for students at all stages and oversees programs that support and improve undergraduate teaching and learning.
